How do I survive carnival?

How do I survive carnival?

It's Carnival time again: for 4 days people 'under the rivers' dive into the party atmosphere and it's days of fun and polonaise.... and often (too) much alcohol and irregular and bad food ... Not so good for your resistance that really gets a beating these days! I can already hear you thinking "Don't honk", and yes, it's all very well while it's party time, but after the herring, you'll want to get back to your normal routine...

What can you do to survive carnival in good health and without gaining too many kilos?

11 survival tips for a good carnival

People thrive best on Peace, Order and Regularity: make sure you have some regularity even with these crazy crazy days:

  1. Start each day with a large glass of lukewarm (filtered) water with lemon juice. Lemon juice detoxifies and helps your kidneys to eliminate waste products.
  2. Eat 2 or 3 good, healthy meals and nothing else in between. This way your blood sugar level will not spike too much and your liver will not be overloaded even more.
  3. Have an emperor's breakfast with lots of protein and healthy fats. This way you have a good base for the day: for example 3 eggs with bacon and spinach, or an avocado with egg and bacon from the oven and a handful of nuts.
  4. Make sure you have a good and quiet meal in the evening: go somewhere with your friends for a nice meal or take them home (where you have already prepared all kinds of meals for the carnival... At 'our mom's' house, there used to be a big pan of vegetable soup, dozens of eggs and she had skewers and steaks for whoever wanted them...).
  5. Do not drink alcohol during meals. It's all very pleasant, but if you combine alcohol with a fatty snack, you'll be eating a lot of calories in a short space of time. Your liver cannot process it all and will store excess sugars in its fat cells.
  6. Make sure you move a lot during carnival: nice dancing and a lot of walking during the pub crawl... to illustrate: you burn 1 glass of beer during 10 minutes of intensive dancing.
  7. Don't drink too much alcohol. For some people it's an obvious choice, but if you think about it beforehand and make appointments with yourself, you'll succeed better to stick to it during the carnival. Don't start drinking in the morning but have your first glass as late as possible in the day. This way you will last much longer and you will remember what happened in the evening. And that is a lot of fun!
  8. Drink a glass of water after each glass of beer. This will also help you to hold on longer and the alcohol will have less of a hold on you.
  9. Brabant nights are long.... Before you go to sleep, drink 2 full glasses of water and put a glass of water by your bed. You get a hangover because the alcohol dehydrates you, so make sure you stay hydrated and get rid of the waste.
  10. Make sure you get enough sleep and go home on time: the party will go on without you and you'll thank yourself the next day.
  11. When the carnival unfortunately has come to an end, take extra good care of yourself the following days: sleep a lot, rest in between, eat extra healthy with lots of vegetables and fruit, drink a lot of water and herbal tea.

Alcohol is sugars, lots of sugars... be aware of this. Want to know what sugars do to your body? Read this blog: 5 tips why cut down on sugar. And going to the chip shop every day? Those are unhealthy fats, a lot of unhealthy fats. Do you want to know what fats do for your body? Read this blog:Is your Personal DNA Diet low in carbs or fat?

In short: Make sure you are well prepared for the carnival (and I don't mean your fancy carnival outfit!) and take good care of your inner self!
